Refugio de Esperanza celebrates 25 years!

Refugio de Esperanza ("Refuge of Hope" in Spanish) just finished off a week of celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the school. The celebration week included a day of sports and competitions, a parade through the city, an awards ceremony and a reunion with former students. Since the humble beginnings in 1988 (beginning with only a handful of students and little to no resources), the school has grown to support hundreds of children. Nearly every adult with a disability in this region of Peru has been through the school. Many come back to volunteer because their experience was so transformative.

After 25 years there are major repairs needed to the infrastructure of the school.  The septic system (apart from a tank that was replaced last year) is in shambles. The school now has the opportunity to connect to the public sewage system, which would replace the antiquated septic tanks and provide more sanitary conditions for the students. This task, however, requires major renovations and new construction of pipelines at hefty costs.
